Bryan Safi needs his own TV show

These videos, produced for a segment called “That’s Gay” for Info Mania (or Current TV, I’m not sure) are a few years old but hot diggity damn they are funny!

Bryan Safi needs his own show. Which is exactly what I tweeted him a few weeks ago and he tweeted me back (swoon) and said he agreed! Read more »

Happy New Year

I’m pretty damn particular about which versions of the song Auld Lang Syne I like. And I like this one… a lot. Sung but Dougie MacLean, one of Scotland’s most successful and popular musicians, this version is hauntingly beautiful and there are lots of Scottish words that I don’t understand. So I like it even more. Read more »

Showgirls 2? Yes, It’s Real

That’s right, haters! 16 years later, the magic that is Showgirls is now a sequel!!! Showgirls 2: Penny’s From Heaven. That’s right, say it again, Showgirls 2: Penny’s From Heaven. Oh how I have waited for this day! They said it couldn’t be done, but it has been done!

As everyone knows I am a Showgirls aficionado. I’ve seen this work of art dozens of times, many of those times on the big screen, where it belongs, in all its glory. (I wrote a post bursting with love to celebrate its birthday a few years ago.) Showgirls is a true work of art and I can’t get enough of it. And now Showgirls 2: Penny’s From Heaven will take us to that special place again. Read more »

Happy Halloween! This weekend in Phoenix…

This week there are two great events downtown. Unfortunately they are on the same day.

This Friday at The Rock on 7th Avenue and McDowell, Pandemonium presents the Halloween Spooktacular. And guess what, I’m in it! The show begins at 10 pm and opens with numbers from All About Evil, Scary: The Musical, other Halloween favorites like Monster Mash, some spooky Halloween videos, then we move into Rocky Horror Live. I’m Rocky Horror and I get to wear nothing but tiny gold shorts and I sing and dance in the Floor Show with Dr. Frank, Columbia, Brad and Janet. It’s my Phoenix stage debut so don’t miss it! (Fair warning: this is not a show for the easily offended.) There will also be a costume contest at the end, followed by a screening of the film All About Evil. Read more »

My Essay on Mormon Expression Podcast

One of my favorite podcasts, Mormon Expression, holds an annual essay contest for listeners to share stories pertaining to anything related to Mormonism. $100 is the top prize.

Listeners were asked to write an essay and record it as an mp3. I submitted my mp3 just under the wire and it is now included in an episode of Mormon Expression!! I didn’t win, but I’m still pleased with my essay about polygamy and what I learned from a polygamist woman I befriended. You can listen to it here. I’m the second essay on episode A. Read more »

“You Should Meet My Son” at FilmBar

QTalk Arizona in partnership with ‘N Touch Magazine is bringing You Should Meet My Son, a fish out of water comedy, to FilmBar on September 23 and September 25.

A few months ago, Keith Hartman, the writer and director of You Should Meet My Son emailed me and asked if QTalk Arizona could help bring the film to Phoenix. It had debuted at LGBT film festivals and won Best Feature in Ontario, the Best Men’s Feature in North Carolina, and the Best Domestic Feature in Memphis, but hadn’t yet been shown in Phoenix. “You Should Meet My Son” to Screen at FilmBar

A few months ago I received an email from Keith Hartman, the writer and director of an award winning film called “You Should Meet My Son”, a comedy about a conservative Southern mother who is horrified to learn that her son is gay. But as a loving, devoted mother she knows she doesn’t want her son to go through life alone and decides to find him a husband, so she and her elderly sister embark into the unknown world of gay Birmingham.

I pulled some strings and QTalk Arizona with N’Touch Magazine are bringing the film to Phoenix! The film will screen at FilmBar (the only true indie theater in this entire city, and a fine establishment if I do say so myself.) Read more »

REVIEW: Men Who Love Men

This post is part of an ongoing LGBT Reading Challenge that I’m participating in this year. I’m a little behind in my reading, but will try to catch up. My first review for a book called Gay Bar is posted here.

Part of this reading challenge is to explore LGBT fiction. Admittedly, I haven’t read very much of this particular genera so I don’t have much to compare the novel Men who Love Men to, but I hope that LGBT fiction gets better than this.

Men Who Love Men is the third installment in a series of which I have not read the previous two novels. But that didn’t make reading the third book confusing. I want to say up front that I didn’t think the writing was terrible, I was entertained and engaged as the pages turned. Some of the imagery towards the end I thought was quite chilling and vivid. I can still see the images my mind conjured up after reading a particular chapter and I remember how I felt when I read it. That’s a good thing. The characters seemed real enough, not too flat for my taste, but no one I really related to or would want to be friends with. Read more »

Best Vogue Ever

This video warms my heart for so many reasons!

In the summer of 1991, 9 year old Robert Jeffrey took a trip with his family to the Hampton Beach Casino. He found a place where he could lip synch to his favorite song in front of a blue screen and have it recorded for time and all eternity.

As any normal 9 year old boy would do, he choose to lip synch and dance to the the hit song “Vogue”!

I’ll let you in on a little secret… I used to dance around and lip synch to this song in my room in 1991 when I was 9 years old as well. That was the same year my family got cable and I would watch the forbidden MTV for hours on end hoping to see Madonna’s video for Vogue so I could pick up a few dance moves.

I swear if this video doesn’t make you smile and feel good about being who you are you must be an ice cold wasp.

Thank you Robert Jeffrey for posting this! It made my day!

Holding Out for a Hero

I met a guy who lives in downtown Phoenix and he writes his own comic book called Section 1138. I wrote a story about him for the Downtown Phoenix Journal.

It’s posted here.

He’s going to be at the Phoenix Comicon this weekend and I’m looking forward to buying a copy of this comic.

Las Vegas says goodbye to the Sahara

The Moroccan themed Sahara Hotel and Casino opened in Las Vegas on October 7, 1952, the 6th casino to open on the Strip and at the time, one of the largest with 1,720 rooms.

In it’s heyday, the Sahara was the place to see the biggest names in show business, people like Dean Martin, Johnny Carson, Don Rickles, and Tina Turner. The original version of Oceans 11 was filmed at the Sahara in 1960. Four years later the Sahara brought the Beatles to town, although the band had to play in the Las Vegas Convention Center because the crowd was too big for the 600-seat showroom at the hotel.
